VisualDx’s free resources for public health
Provides free information and images from VisualDx for the following conditions: cutaneous anthrax, inhalational anthrax, botulism, bubonic plaque, chikungunya, fusarium keratitis, measles, MRSA (methicillin-resistant Sthaphylococcus aureus), pneumonic plaque, septicemic plague, pressure ulcer, smallpox, tularemia, and viral hemorrhagic fevers. Unlike the paid version of VisualDx, the website is NOT interactive and does not allow you to enlarge images.

Includes a collection of interactive images supplemented with information on the history of illness, a description of specimen, and comments about the case. Some images are accompanied with information on microscopic appearances. The images contain “hotspots;” when clicking on certain areas of the image, a brief description of that spot will appear in a frame to the right of the screen. Java software is needed to view images.6 An Images of Disease Lite application is available free to download on iTunes.7

Click “Start Demo” for Save a Life to start the interactive demonstration. You will learn to test and operate a defibrillator with a virtual patient. Users must go to defibrillator view, turn the knob from off to 1 DEFIB, connect the defibrillator port with the test defibrillator, adjust the energy level, charge the defibrillator, press the shock button to test the defibrillator, connect the defibrillator pads, and place the defibrillator pads in the correct location on the patient’s body.

The Cranial Nerve Experiment
Tutorials cover fuctions and paths of cranial nerves. You select a nerve, with the trigeminal nerve subdivided into three branches (ophthalmic nerve, maxillary nerve, and mandibular nerve). You are given a 3-d skull with two views: external view showing the pathway of the nerve and an animated internal that acts like a rollercoaster as it follows the nerve’s path. Users may move backward and forward along the path and mouse over points along the path to see more information. There is one component for the facial nerve and vestibulocochlear nerve.

There are modules for brain MRI, skull base CT, cranial nerves MRI, temporal bone CT, sinus CT, orbit CT, head CTA, neck CT, thoracolumbar junction CT, teeth panorex, and neck CT cervical lymph node levels. Each module except the last two show axial, sagittal, and coronal cross-sections. Users may move along a single axis using the arrow keys or mouse wheel and along multiple axes by clicking and dragging. Placing the cursor over a named structure highlights it in each view. Users can also choose to permanently highlight individual structures or groups of related structures by using a drop-down menu. You can select ‘‘quiz mode’’ for a simple anatomy quiz. There are 250 cases and some flashcards as well.
